![Casey Chong showcases a collection of chilling dog horror films that you must watch…
Dogs have earned their reputation as "man's best friend," thanks to their loyalty, dedication, and companionship. While adorable dogs often take center stage in films, some have been effectively utilized in the horror genre, portraying these furry companions as terrifying creatures instead of cherished pets. With the supernatural dog horror film Good Boy now available [read our review here], we've compiled a list of impressive dog horror movies featuring some truly troublesome canines…
Cujo (1983)
Saint Bernards are usually recognized for their loyalty and gentleness, making them great family pets. However, in Cujo, adapted from Stephen King’s 1981 novel, this classic dog horror story takes a dark turn, transforming a typically friendly Saint Bernard into a brutal killer after being bitten by a rabid bat. The film initially focuses on human issues—Donna’s (Dee Wallace) affair with ex-boyfriend Steve (Christopher Stone), her crumbling marriage to Vic (Daniel Hugh-Kelly), his struggles with a failing advertising agency, and their son Tad’s (Danny Pintauro) fears of monsters lurking in the closet. As their anxieties intensify, especially from Donna and Tad’s viewpoints, it ultimately erupts into a full-blown horror as the increasingly rabid Cujo attacks. The tension peaks in the latter half when Donna and Tad find themselves trapped in a car with Cujo outside trying to get to them.
The Pack (1977)
It’s easy to overlook Robert Clouse's horror film amidst his action-heavy filmography that includes Enter the Dragon and the China O’Brien series. The Pack stands out, demonstrating the director's unexpected talent for blending visceral horror with survival drama on Seal Island. Joe Don Baker delivers a compelling performance as Jerry, a family man who moves with his loved ones to the island, only to face terror from a pack of wild, hungry dogs. The film explores the psychological condition of these dogs, abandoned by neglectful owners, which drives them to turn on humans. Clouse builds the tension carefully, elevating the stakes as the graphic and violent dog attack scenes unfold. While centering on man versus nature, the adapted screenplay from David Fisher’s 1976 novel also incorporates empathy, leading to a heartfelt conclusion.
White Dog (1982)
Samuel Fuller’s racially charged horror drama is uniquely told from the perspective of a white German Shepherd, serving as a harsh metaphor for hatred and prejudice. The dog isn’t innately villainous but has been trained by a racist owner to aggressively attack Black individuals. The story follows an actress, played by Kristy McNichol, who inadvertently hits the dog while driving at night and later adopts him, discovering his disturbing traits. Instead of abandoning him, she believes the dog can deprogram his harmful tendencies. The narrative delves into the complex question of whether racism can be "cured" or, in this case, whether a dog can be rehabilitated, with Keys (Paul Winfield) overseeing the retraining. Fuller, who co-wrote the screenplay with Curtis Hanson, tackles the subject matter head-on, resulting in a bleak and thought-provoking conclusion.
Man’s Best Friend (1993)
Picture The Terminator, reimagined as a genetically engineered Tibetan Mastiff named Max, whose DNA combines various animal species. Max can be a loyal pet in the right hands, as seen with television personality Lori Tanner (Ally Sheedy), who adopts him. However, he can become a terrifying killer in the wrong environment. Writer-director John Lafia, who previously directed Child’s Play 2, diverges from typical sci-fi horror clichés by incorporating dark comedy elements (like the scene where Max chases a bothersome ginger cat). He embraces gore and violence while benefiting from Lance Henriksen's casting as the unethical scientist responsible for the dog’s genetic alterations.
Baxter (1989)
Writer-director Jérôme Boivin offers a unique perspective in his French-language dog horror film, telling the story of Baxter, the white bull terrier, through Maxime Leroux’s subtle voiceover. Baxter shares his disillusioned views of the world as he moves from the care of an elderly woman to a young couple. His initial joy as a pet wanes when his humans neglect him, triggering his murderous instincts. Boivin’s portrayal of violence leans more towards suggestive and psychological rather than overtly gruesome. The film's somber tone intensifies in the second half as Baxter comes under the care of an introverted boy fascinated by Hitler. This conventional "boy and dog" narrative shifts into something disturbing, with Boivin unflinchingly delivering a pessimistic finale.
Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell (1978)
Surprisingly, Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell is a made-for-television film, yet Curtis Harrington imbues it with a notably darker tone. Despite the lackluster special](https://ekb166.ru/thumbs/ekb166.ru-700/aa/3b/A-large-scale-power-outage-occurred-in-Yekaterinburg.webp)
