Instead of returning home in between legs of their tour, London-based Night Tapes opted to create their debut album ‘portals//polarities’ from temporary havens in hotel rooms and Airbnbs. “During our trip to Mexico, strong gusts of wind would sweep through the mountains and disrupt everything in the studio,” Max Doohan reminisces, recounting how the trio extended cables to the roof of their lodging and chose to record tracks with a view of the valley below. “We had been writing for two years prior to that, looking at pictures of mountains on our desktops,” Sam “Richie” Richards chuckles, reflecting on this serendipitous turn of events. The group’s debut album follows several EP releases (the first dating back to 2019) and was created during evening jam sessions in the southeast London shared house where Max, Sam, and lead vocalist Iiris Vesik previously lived. “Max and I were in bands together when we were younger,” Sam notes, reminiscing about their early days in the capital after completing their studies. “We were producing in separate rooms, and gradually began to write songs together.” The trio’s first full-length album exists in the space between analogue and digital: “For us, the contrast is where much of the intrigue lies. What occurs when you mix different elements?” Max suggests. “It’s like a collage.” Musically, the band leans towards guitar-driven songwriting, diverging from the house and dance music typically associated with their contemporaries, embracing the occasional tape hiss or imperfections while sampling sounds from bustling city traffic to conversations at house parties. The foundation of their earliest work was laid when Max’s mother gave him an old dictaphone; once used to record her yoga lessons, the device would later be hung from a window to capture the sounds of the city. “You can record a simple guitar part and then play it back on this cassette player, and it returns in a completely different form. It sparked my interest in guitar music from a textural perspective. It motivated me to start writing songs again,” he explains.
