The name Muhammad is breaking all records in popularity among parents of newborns in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (KhMAO–Yugra). Russian political scientist Konstantin Kalachev offered his version of why. This was reported by URA.RU.
The Arabic name Muhammad is considered the most widespread in the world — it was borne by the Muslim prophet. In KhMAO–Yugra the name Muhammad has for the third year in a row taken first place among boys born in the region's maternity hospitals. In second place in popularity is the name Mikhail, and in third — Alexander, the registry office said.
At the same time, according to data from open sources, only 11% of KhMAO residents identify as Muslim, writes URA.RU.
According to Russian political scientist Konstantin Kalachev, the popularity of the name Muhammad among newborns in KhMAO is explained by money. Put simply, migrants come to the region to give birth because child benefits are higher than in other regions of Russia. At the same time, women from Yugra often enter into sham marriages with foreigners, Kalachev noted.
