The head of the public organization “Social Assistance and Support for the Ivdel Mansi,” Valery Zenkov, died as a result of a multi-vehicle crash on the Ivdel–Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug highway on the evening of January 17. This was reported to URA.RU by the human rights commissioner for Sverdlovsk Region, Tatyana Merzlyakova.
The ombudsman confirmed that the victim was a 70-year-old public figure who for many years had been involved in supporting the numerically small indigenous Mansi people.
She also emphasized that Zenkov was a member of working groups under government authorities and took an active part in resolving issues concerning the indigenous peoples of the North. According to the ombudsman, he helped the Mansi with paperwork, obtaining medical assistance, and accessing social support measures.
Earlier the traffic police reported that the crash occurred on January 17. A Hyundai Santa Fe, traveling from the direction of Yugorsk toward Ivdel, collided with a Renault Logan that was on the shoulder. After the impact the Renault was thrown into a Toyota Camry parked at the edge of the road; the Camry’s driver had stopped to assist participants in an earlier incident.
According to the State Traffic Inspectorate, the 70-year-old owner of the Toyota was on the shoulder as a pedestrian at the time of the crash and died at the scene from his injuries. The drivers of the Hyundai and the Renault, as well as three passengers — women aged 30 and 49 and a 17-year-old girl — were taken to hospital with injuries of varying severity. A five-month-old child was also in the Hyundai and is fine.
