In Yekaterinburg, flowers from Armenia will be mass destroyed.

In Yekaterinburg, a large batch of flowers from Armenia infected with a dangerous pest is set to be destroyed. This concerns 1,400 cut lisianthus stems, in which pupae of the tobacco whitefly were found. Such products are prohibited from being imported into Russia and are subject to immediate destruction. This was reported by the Ural Interregional Directorate of the Rosselkhoznadzor.

      — According to quarantine legislation, cuttings infected with the tobacco whitefly are not allowed to be released into circulation. Such products are subject to destruction. Measures of phytosanitary control have been carried out regarding the imported quarantine products, as a result of which a quarantine object was identified — the pupae of the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Gennadius), the agency clarified.

The tobacco whitefly is one of the most dangerous quarantine pests, affecting more than 600 plant species from 73 families. The larvae and adult individuals suck sap, causing deformation and wilting of leaves, and excrete sticky sugary substances on which sooty fungi develop, further suppressing the plants. The pest is capable of transmitting more than 100 types of viral infections, which, when infected, can lead to the loss of 80% to 100% of the harvest, writes Ura.Ru.

It was previously reported that flowers from Lithuania were brought to Yekaterinburg and destroyed.
