The police in Yekaterinburg have urged caution regarding counterfeit banknotes due to the high quality of the forgery.

Fake banknotes, due to the high quality of counterfeits, can end up in circulation in any organizations and establishments, warns the police of Yekaterinburg on Tuesday. Sometimes, it is difficult to detect counterfeits even with the help of special equipment, reports the media relations department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for Yekaterinburg.

It is advisable to exercise particular caution when making payments at retail points with questionable reputations, at markets, and also during transactions with unfamiliar individuals. In such situations, it is especially important to carefully check the banknotes received.

The most reliable method for verifying the authenticity of a banknote, according to the police, is micro-perforation.

To assess it, you need to hold the banknote up to a light source and find the number corresponding to the denomination (5000, 2000, or 1000). On a genuine banknote, this number is formed by even, barely noticeable parallel rows of micro-holes that are imperceptible to touch. If the area with holes feels rough and the irregularities are distinctly palpable, you are dealing with a counterfeit.

Pay attention to the magnetic strip as well. On real banknotes, it is embedded in the paper, while on counterfeits, it may be deformed. Sometimes, in the area where the strip is located, there is a noticeable adhesion of two sheets of paper—this is also a sure sign of a counterfeit.

If you have doubts about the authenticity of a banknote and it is impossible to check it on the spot, remember the characteristics of the person who is paying with the suspicious banknote, and if possible, note the make, color, and number of their vehicle. After that, immediately report to the internal affairs authorities.

Attempting to pass off a counterfeit banknote, even if it came to you accidentally, is a crime (Article 186 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Distribution of Counterfeit Money").

In all cases of discovering counterfeit banknotes, it is necessary to immediately contact the police.
