The former head of the Ural capital has died.
The former chairman of the executive committee of the Sverdlovsk City Council of People's Deputies, Yuri Novikov, has passed away. The press service of the administration of Yekaterinburg reported Novikov's death at the age of 90.
Yuri Vasilievich Novikov was born on March 12, 1937, in Kurgan. After serving in the army and graduating from the Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute in 1964, he was assigned to Sverdlovsk. He worked at the Y.M. Sverdlov Transport Engineering Plant (now JSC Uraltransmash), rising from a design engineer to the deputy chief designer, according to the obituary on the official portal of the Ural capital.
Novikov's party career began at the enterprise where he was the secretary of the party committee.
Starting in 1980, he began to climb the party ladder: first, he moved to the position of second secretary in the Railway District Committee, and by 1981 he headed the organizational department of the Sverdlovsk City Committee of the CPSU, becoming the second secretary of the Sverdlovsk City Committee in 1984.
In December 1988, Yuri Novikov was elected chairman of the executive committee of the Sverdlovsk City Council of People's Deputies, a position he held until September 4, 1991.
It was during these years that the first metro stations opened in Sverdlovsk, now Yekaterinburg. The building of the Drama Theater, a diagnostic center, and a maternity hospital in Uralmash were also put into operation.
After 1991, Yuri Novikov headed the administration of the Sverdlovsk region, holding positions as chairman of the committee for industry and secretary of the governor of the Sverdlovsk region. He completed his civil service in 2002 as an advisor to the governor.
The farewell ceremony for Yuri Novikov will take place on June 29 in Yekaterinburg.
