A working meeting between the leaders of SIZO-5 and representatives of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Sverdlovsk Region (Central Muftiyat) took place on Thursday, August 20, on the territory of the detention center.
During the meeting, including with the first deputy mufti Ibrahim Yakubov, issues related to the organization of work on spiritual and moral education and upbringing of individuals in places of deprivation of liberty were discussed.
The participants of the meeting agreed on the prospects for further cooperation in ensuring the convicted persons' right to freedom of conscience and religion, as well as conducting regular educational work.
Clergy provide spiritual care for the convicts, conduct activities for religious education, and explain the canons of traditional faith.
Following the meeting, the deputy head of SIZO-5 Ivan Tarasov was awarded the "Bronze Crescent" medal for his contribution to strengthening interfaith and interethnic tolerance.
Earlier in April, it was reported that the "Bronze Crescent" medals were awarded to the head of SIZO-5 Denis Kosov and his deputy.
In October of last year, it became known that men, including Muslims accused of serious crimes, began to be placed in what was once a women's SIZO. One of the female detainees contacted member of the Human Rights Council under the President of Russia Marina Akhmedova, recounting that special, privileged conditions were created for the accused men in SIZO. At Akhmedova's request, the Sverdlovsk ombudsman Tatyana Merzlyakova visited SIZO-5. After her visit to the institution, Tatyana Georgievna reported that the information about the "prison jamaat" was not confirmed.
