Today at 09:42, Red Square 1905 in the center of Yekaterinburg has been completely transformed into a pedestrian zone, possibly permanently, reports E1.RU. A park has been established directly on the cobblestones.
The main square of the Ural capital has started a large festival called "Summer on the Square," which will last until the end of September, according to E1.RU. Visitors can enjoy relaxation zones, with trees and shrubs planted in wooden tubs.
"This is a new development for Yekaterinburg's central square, replacing the parking lot. People are satisfied; they find it comfortable to be here. It’s beautiful, aesthetic, pleasing to the eye, and it creates a good mood not only for residents but also for our guests," commented Yekaterinburg Mayor Alexey Orlov.
Soon, a padel tennis court—a lightweight racket sport gaining popularity—may appear here.
According to the mayor’s office, over 70% of city residents voted to remove the parking lot from Red Square 1905. Responding to the residents' wishes, for the first time in many decades, an ice rink operated on the square until the end of March last winter. The first step to changing the functional use of Yekaterinburg's main square during summer 2021 was taken by the "AtmosFest" festival team, which placed their gardens on Red Square 1905.
