Today at 15:05, Sverdlovsk Regional Oncology Dispensary (SOOD) performed a complex operation to remove a malignant liver tumor in a 60-year-old man. During the procedure, surgeons used innovative technology that allows healthy tissues of the organ to be preserved and restored even after resection of a significant part of it. The success of the operation was ensured by the teamwork of specialists: abdominal and endovascular surgeons, as well as anesthesiologists.

As Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Surgery Gleb Kichigin explained, for hepatocellular carcinoma — the most common type of liver cancer — surgery remains the primary treatment method. It can be performed either through traditional open surgery or via minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques.

"The main thing is to ensure that the remaining part of the liver can take over the functions of the removed section. In such cases, we essentially stimulate the organ's regeneration. However, such interventions are not always possible — their feasibility depends on the condition of the liver. Most of our patients have comorbidities, such as hepatitis B, C, or cirrhosis," noted Kichigin.

After the operation, the patient continues to be monitored by doctors: every three months, he undergoes check-up examinations at the oncology center. According to medical personnel, the restored part of the liver functions normally, and the man's overall condition is stable.

According to statistics from the regional Ministry of Health, approximately 500 new cases of liver cancer are detected annually in Sverdlovsk region. This disease is among the most common cancers worldwide and often develops against the background of chronic liver conditions or unhealthy lifestyles.

In early stages, the disease usually proceeds without obvious symptoms, so regular ultrasound examinations of the abdominal cavity are important for timely detection.
