It has become known exactly how the detainees convicted of terrorism managed to escape from pretrial detention center No. 1 in Yekaterinburg.
The disappearance of the detainees was noticed on Monday, September 1, at 10:20. A source told the publication "KP-Yekaterinburg" that Alexander Ch. and Ivan K. broke open their cell and climbed onto the roof, after which they moved onto the building of the Yekaterinburg diocese. They went into the city via the neighboring cemetery.
KP-Yekaterinburg learned that both convicts, who had been recruited by Ukraine to carry out a terrorist attack, had been troubled adolescents in the past.
Thus, 24-year-old Alexander Ch., born in Nizhniye Sergi, was first convicted while still in school. He was already prone to escape back then, evading the compulsory labor to which the court had sentenced him. The second detainee, Ivan K., is from Kirovgrad. As a child he lived in the "Karavella" social center and trained as a cook.
Both were recruited by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in spring 2023 — for 40,000 rubles they agreed to set fire to the Kirovsky District military enlistment office in Yekaterinburg, and were later detained by the FSB.
The criminal case was investigated under Part 3 of Article 30 and paragraph "a" of Part 2 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — "Preparation for a terrorist act."
In October 2024 the regional military court sentenced Ivan K. to 9.5 years in a maximum-security penal colony, and Alexander Ch. to 7 years in a maximum-security penal colony. Both have been added to Rosfinmonitoring's list of terrorists and extremists.
"They filed appeals and cassation. But all were unsuccessful. From the 'Central' the detainees were supposed to be sent to the colony where those serving sentences for terrorism serve their terms," a source familiar with the situation told "KP-Yekaterinburg."
