In Yekaterinburg, the court sent a reckless female motorist to a penal colony after she fatally struck a woman.

The Academic District Court of Yekaterinburg on Tuesday, October 7 handed down a verdict to a local resident in a criminal case involving a violation of traffic rules that resulted in the death of a pedestrian, the press service of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Sverdlovsk Region reports.

The accident occurred at about 1 p.m. on September 2 last year. Driving a technically sound personal Toyota Tercel, the woman, born in 1956, was traveling along Chusovskoy Trakt in the Akademichesky District at a speed of no less than 85 km/h.

When approaching an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing the accused did not reduce speed and, having failed to see the woman on the crossing in time, ran her over. From the injuries sustained the female pedestrian died at the scene.

The woman was found guilty under part 3 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (violation by a person driving a vehicle of traffic rules which through negligence resulted in the death of a person). During the court hearing the accused did not admit guilt.

“In accordance with subparagraphs 1.3, 1.5, 10.1, 14.1 of the Traffic Rules of the Russian Federation, the convicted person was obliged to know that a driver must operate a vehicle at a speed not exceeding the established limit and, when approaching an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing, yield to pedestrians. Having shown criminal negligence, she ignored the fact of approaching an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing,” the prosecutor’s office said.

The court sentenced the guilty party to 1.5 years in a settlement colony and revoked her driving license for 2 years. In addition, the court ordered the convict to pay the relatives of the deceased 1 million rubles in moral damages.
