The criminal case into the deaths of young men who drowned in a Lexus in Nizhny Tagil has been closed.
The police in Nizhny Tagil have closed the criminal investigation into the deaths of three young people who drowned in a Lexus after it fell from the city dam.
The tragedy occurred on the night of July 8. The previous evening 20-year-old Veronika Svatova, her friend Anastasia Shamrina and 19-year-old cyclist Alexander Storozhev went out for a drive around the city. The young man had taken a black Lexus LX 570 SUV from his father.
"The criminal case has been closed; I found out about it on October 7," Anastasia’s mother told KP-Ekaterinburg.
The group was driving along Lenin Avenue in the area of the city dam, making lap after lap. The first pass went without incident — they had probably been able to avoid speeding then because of a motorcyclist riding ahead. However, a minute later the car lost control on a curve, broke through two barriers and fell into the water.
At 00:40 the SUV overturned and sank. Through the open driver’s window the cabin quickly filled with water. All three — Alexander and the two girls — died of asphyxiation while drowning. Divers raised the car and the bodies after ten hours.
"They were at a depth of about two meters. Sasha’s arms were bloodied — he managed to unbuckle his seatbelt and help one of the girls get out. The other was trapped by the airbags. The divers said that my son opened the door but could not get out himself," the driver’s mother, Irina Storozheva, previously said.
