Officers of the operational department of Krasnoturyinsk Penal Colony No. 3 helped solve a long-ago crime — the murder of a child committed 23 years ago.

Operatives of the Federal Penitentiary Service’s institution for Sverdlovsk Region received information that one of the inmates, a convict, might have been involved in the disappearance and death of an 11-year-old girl who went missing more than two decades ago. The information was passed to the police, after which joint work led to the establishment of the circumstances of the crime.

Investigators determined that the tragedy occurred in December 2002. The girl went to visit a family acquaintance where a man and his wife were present. When the woman and her friend briefly went to the store, the child remained in the apartment with the man. When the women returned they did not find the girl, and the man said she had gone home.

After that the schoolgirl was not seen again. Six months later her remains were found in a forest near Volchansk, but at that time it was not possible to identify the perpetrator.

During the new inquiry the man partially admitted his guilt.

The court found him guilty of murdering a minor and sentenced him to 25 years’ imprisonment. He will serve the term in a maximum-security correctional colony.
