Russia's first driverless tram ran between Yekaterinburg and Verkhnyaya Pyshma.
Testing of the unmanned tram "L'vyonok" has begun in the Sverdlovsk Region on Russia's first intermunicipal line "Yekaterinburg — Verkhnyaya Pyshma." The developers spoke about the project's initial results at a panel discussion during the "Cities of Russia" forum.
The CEO of Movista Group LLC, Alexey Zotov, said the launch of such a project became possible thanks to the "digitized" depot built in Verkhnyaya Pyshma. As part of the experiment, the unmanned tram based on model 71-911EM "L'vyonok" successfully completed all stages of depot servicing without human involvement.
Thus, after the end of a shift the tram can "independently" enter the depot for washing and maintenance. Then, following a set algorithm, the "L'vyonok" positions itself at the gate, from where it will depart on a new run the next day. This mode of operation for trams makes it possible to subsequently reduce the costs of fleet maintenance and servicing, EAN's correspondent reported from the forum.
The synchronization of the digital depot's functions with the tram's automatic systems allows it to perform tasks on its own. In addition, the tram can detect obstacles on its route by itself; tests are being conducted in various weather conditions. The project's developers emphasize that the main goal is not to replace drivers—the system is aimed at supporting the stable operation of the tram line.
Earlier it was reported that Yekaterinburg will buy the country's first five-section tram.
