Sverdlovsk Oblast lacks around 2,500 medical workers.
There is a shortage of cardiologists, neuropathologists and neurologists in the Sverdlovsk Region, said Sergey Ugrinov, chairman of the Sverdlovsk regional organization of the Russian Health Workers' Union.
"I often travel to the localities; I can say that there aren't enough narrow specialists. For example, in Alapaevsk there is one cardiologist for the whole town. There are three hospitals there; I wonder how he copes with the workload. According to our data, we are short of about 2,500 doctors and medical personnel," KP‑Yekaterinburg quotes Ugrinov as saying.
In addition, a law will come into force in Russia on March 1, 2026, introducing mandatory service and mentorship for graduates of medical universities and colleges. The service terms will be up to three years. In the Sverdlovsk Region the quota for targeted admissions will be doubled starting next year. At first, such innovations may deter potential applicants.
"Some students have already said they are ready to leave. I think we need to work with them, to properly orient them. There will be an outflow in the first year, but we will benefit from it. We will get rid of medical workers who went into medicine with the aim of making money. Of course, we are trying to influence salary levels as well. But medicine is not only about money. In the end, people who have thought it all through and are determined to come to hospitals and devote themselves to healthcare will come," Sergey Ugrinov believes.
Earlier it became known that the Sverdlovsk Region ranked second‑to‑last in the country in terms of provision with doctors.
