Former deputy governor of the Sverdlovsk region Oleg Chemezov, accused of fraud, may be released from the pretrial detention center before the New Year. His pretrial detention is likely to be changed to house arrest, Kommersant‑Ural has learned.
As a source close to the investigation told Kommersant‑Ural, the former Sverdlovsk deputy governor Oleg Chemezov will be released from custody due to deteriorating health. He is currently held in Pretrial Detention Center No. 7 in the Chelyabinsk region.
Due to poor nutrition and a lack of medicines, Chemezov suffered an exacerbation of a chronic condition. The relapse was confirmed during an examination by a medical commission carried out at the defense's request. The ex-official requires specialized treatment that cannot be provided in a detention facility.
Oleg Chemezov is a defendant in a criminal case concerning fraud involving funds of the United Heat Supply Company (a subsidiary of Oblkommunenergo). According to the investigation, former beneficiaries of the utilities business and the official Chemezov carried out thefts from the regional budget in the course of implementing concession agreements.
