“With dwarf hippos the situation is unique: in captivity males are not born, only females. No one can explain this phenomenon. In Russia these animals are scarce, about six, no more. The other 5–6 Russian female hippos are also looking for suitors, the competition is fierce,” Ura.Ru quoted the institution’s director Svetlana Prilepina as saying.
Earlier it was reported that hippo Eva may be left without a suitor from the Czech Republic due to anti-Russian sanctions.
