Two weeks' difference has accumulated. Russia will celebrate the "Old" New Year today.
The "Old" New Year will be celebrated today in Russia. The origin of this strange holiday was explained on the "Morning Express" broadcast by urban space researcher and guide Svetlana Gatsulenko, the Telegram channel "Fourth Channel" writes.
The fact is that Russia switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar later than other European countries, in 1918.
"The telegram that was sent from Russia used to arrive in Europe several days before it was sent. And the Soviet authorities decided to change the calendar. That happened in February 1918," Svetlana Gatsulenko told Fourth Channel.
However, the Russian Orthodox Church has not accepted those changes to this day and continues to follow the Julian calendar. Therefore Orthodox Christians in Russia continue to celebrate the Nativity of Christ on the night of January 6–7 (those very same two weeks later than in Europe). And the New Year, accordingly, also shifted to the night of January 13–14.
I mark it mentally, but in recent years I don't celebrate it.
