The State Traffic Inspectorate announced the number of fatalities on roads in the Sverdlovsk Region during the New Year's holidays.
On the first working day, the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Sverdlovsk Region summed up its work during the longest New Year holidays in Russia's history.
Around 400 DPS officers ensured road safety daily, said Galina Kravchenko, head of the Road Traffic Safety Promotion Department and a police captain.
On peak days the deployment of state traffic inspectors was further strengthened. About 15 additional patrols were formed each day, with special attention paid to traffic flows on the approaches to Yekaterinburg.
During the reporting period, 1,014 road accidents were recorded, including 46 with casualties. As a result of the accidents, 8 people died and 56 adults and 8 children were injured.
"More than 730 drivers were removed from the traffic flow, the majority for driving under the influence and without the right to drive," Galina Kravchenko said at a press conference in the TASS-Ural press center.
Despite this, compared with the same period of the previous year, 2025, the statistics show a positive trend: over the 11 days of this year there were a quarter fewer accidents with casualties (26% fewer), 27% fewer fatalities, and 29% fewer injuries.
In 2024 the state program "Road Traffic Safety Strategy in the Russian Federation for 2018–2024" came to an end.
Within its framework, a mortality target was set for the Sverdlovsk Region — no more than 318 people per year. In 2023, as in 2024, exactly 318 people died on the region's roads. These figures were presented at a press conference in January 2025 by the head of the regional agency, Alexey Spiridonov.
From 2025, road traffic safety in Russia is being implemented under the new national project "Infrastructure for Life," Spiridonov said.
