Coffee, quantum computers, and rare books: fresh news in science and culture at the opening of "Chekhovki"
Fresh scientific discoveries and significant cultural events will be discussed by a chemist, a mathematician, and a librarian in the new issue of the oral popular science magazine "Einstein's Language."
The event is organized on May 21 by the Information Center for Atomic Energy (ICAE) of Yekaterinburg at the opening of the renovated "Chekhovka" (Library No. 19 named after A.P. Chekhov).
Recently, chemists have learned to recognize the strength and roast of coffee by measuring these indicators using a new electrochemical method. Kirill Grzhegorzhievsky, a candidate of chemical sciences and head of the Laboratory of Functional Design of Nanocluster Polyoxometalates at the Institute of Physics and Applied Mathematics of Ural Federal University, will explain how scientists help the food industry objectively assess the taste qualities of products.
Ksenia Kuznetsova, the chief librarian of the "Municipal Association of Libraries of Yekaterinburg," who leads book clubs and is the author of the project "Treasures of the Word," will tell how a book can weigh only a few hundred grams but cost more than an apartment in central Moscow. From her presentation, listeners will learn why first editions of books are so expensive and in which libraries of the city one can find rare books from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The limitless potential of quantum computers and the solution to the lonely runner problem will be discussed by Danil Masyutin, a lecturer in mathematical analysis at Ural Federal University and a junior researcher at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The oral popular science magazine "Einstein's Language" helps keep up with the activities of scientists, as there is a lot of news, and it is quite challenging to follow them independently. The moderator of the discussion will be Ekaterina Nechaeva, the head of the information and analytical media "Dvizhenie.ru."
The event will take place on Thursday, May 21, at 19:00 at the opening of the new library named after A.P. Chekhov at the address: Malysheva St., 128.
Admission is free, with registration.
