In Yekaterinburg, doctors saved a patient who fell into a coma.
In Yekaterinburg, doctors from GKB No. 24 saved a 62-year-old patient who fell into a coma due to hypothyroidism (a condition where the thyroid gland produces insufficient amounts of hormones).
The woman was admitted to the hospital on her birthday. Due to increasing swelling, she began to suffocate and lost consciousness. In the hospital, she was diagnosed with "anaphylactic shock, Quincke's edema." The doctors administered anti-shock therapy, but the swelling did not subside.
Additionally, the woman exhibited hair loss, and her face resembled a "moon": her eyes were discernible only by her eyelashes, and the swelling spread to her abdomen, arms, and legs. The doctors conducted a test for thyroid-stimulating hormone, which showed a value of over 50. Ultimately, the diagnosis was made: advanced hypothyroidism. The risk of patient death in such cases reaches 80%.
— "The situation was further exacerbated by fluid in the pericardial sac — due to the compressed heart, the medications were working poorly, and cardiogenic shock was increasing," noted the press service of the Ministry of Health.
The doctors performed a puncture and drainage of the heart, removing 1.6 liters of fluid. Soon she was able to breathe independently, and the swelling completely subsided within a month.
