The holding "Russian Railways" has launched a new digital service at the largest railway stations in Russia - the ability to extend the rental of a storage locker in online mode. The solution is aimed at increasing convenience for passengers and developing contactless services in railway infrastructure.
The service has already been implemented at 345 stations, where nearly 20,000 automatic storage lockers are in operation. On the Sverdlovsk Railway, these stations include Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Tagil, Kamensk-Uralsky, Pervouralsk, Kamyshlov, Serov, Perm-2, Tyumen, Tobolsk, Surgut, Pytyakh, Nizhnevartovsk, Kogalym, Noyabrsk-1, Noyabrsk-2, and Korotchaevo.
To use the service, it is enough to scan the QR code during the initial payment for the locker, specify a mobile phone number, after which a message with a link will be sent to it. By following the link, the user can extend the rental period of the selected locker at any time.
Passengers have access to various locker options for storing luggage - standard, medium, and large, allowing for the selection of the optimal format depending on the volume of items. The flexible pricing system allows for rentals of 1, 3, 6, 8, 12, or 24 hours. Online extension makes using the service even more convenient, allowing for quick changes to the storage duration of luggage.
On the Sverdlovsk Railway, from January to April 2026, passengers rented automatic storage lockers 51,800 times. Most frequently at the Yekaterinburg station (24,900 times), Tyumen (12,300), and Perm-2 (4,100 times). The most in-demand lockers were 60 cm high, which can accommodate one standard suitcase or backpack. The most popular rental duration is 3 hours.
