The Sverdlovsk ombudsman proposed to teach migrant children the Russian language for free.
The Commissioner for Human Rights in the Sverdlovsk Region, Tatyana Merzlyakova, advocated for free Russian language education for migrant children. She stated this during a broadcast on the OTV channel, commenting on issues of socialization and the conflicts arising from it.
According to the ombudsperson, this topic sparks discussions even among members of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation. She noted that some participants take a pragmatic approach: if an employer needs foreign employees, then it is the employer who should pay for their education. However, as Merzlyakova emphasized, this is not only about migrant children but also about preserving the position of the Russian language beyond Russia's borders.
She added that Russia itself limits the opportunities for the spread of the Russian language in countries where it has traditionally played an important role. As an example, the ombudsperson cited Uzbekistan, where more and more young people are choosing schools with an in-depth study of the English language, hoping to continue their education in Japan or European countries.
