Yekaterinburg scientists found tick carriers of extremely dangerous Chinese viruses.
In the Northwestern Federal District, ticks that carry dangerous Beiji and Mukava viruses, as well as a variation of the "Forest" virus, have been found. The viruses were discovered by scientists from the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Pasteur and the Krasovsky Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences from Yekaterinburg. Biologists studied 42 ticks caught in St. Petersburg, Leningrad, Pskov, Arkhangelsk regions, and the Republic of Karelia. This means the pathogen has evolved as it spread from China to Russia.
— All these viruses cause fever, with the Mukava virus being particularly dangerous because it affects the liver of the infected. The peak of infections occurs in spring and summer—the period of tick activity. These viruses have been discovered by Chinese and Japanese scientists in the last decade, but it was not known whether they are widespread in the Russian Federation, the Russian Science Foundation reported.
Earlier, we reported that the Sverdlovsk region was included among the regions with a high risk of contracting encephalitis. In addition, a doctor named the first symptoms of tick-borne encephalitis.
