Charming skunks have arrived at the Yekaterinburg Zoo.

Two masked palm civets, sisters Nisha and Shanti from Novosibirsk, have settled in the Yekaterinburg Zoo.

These small carnivorous mammals from the family Viverridae, found in the forests of South and Southeast Asia, got their name due to the contrasting black-and-white "mask" on their faces.

The girls will soon turn one year old (they were born on August 7, 2025). "Nisha" translates from Sanskrit as "night," while "Shanti" means "peace" and "tranquility." Both fully live up to their names: they move around the enclosure with smooth, silent steps and prefer evening strolls.

In case of danger, civets use an unusual defense mechanism, similar to that of skunks. Their glands secrete a sharply smelling fluid.

"Civets lead a nocturnal arboreal lifestyle, so during the day you are most likely to find them sweetly sleeping in their little houses," the zoo says. "Check on them in the evening when the girls go out for a walk!"

You can see the new inhabitants in the "Eastern" enclosure complex, next to the river otters.
