"Picked up from the floor." A resident of Orenburg stole a passenger's bag with money at Koltsovo Airport (PHOTO)

      A resident of Orenburg, suspected of stealing someone else's bag containing money and documents at Koltsovo Airport, was detained by transport police at the Yekaterinburg air hub shortly after the incident. The wallet with documents, a bank card, and cash amounting to 25,000 rubles belonged to a resident of Revda, reported the Transport Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Ural Federal District.

      The victim, born in 1975, approached the duty unit of the transport police last Friday, August 7, at 09:40, requesting assistance in locating his lost belongings.

      The man explained that he last saw his bag during the security checks in terminal "A," and he discovered its loss while checking in for his flight, after which he immediately sought help from law enforcement.

      Transport police, after reviewing footage from surveillance cameras, established that the victim's shoulder bag was picked up from the floor by one of the airport visitors.

      Identifying the characteristics of the suspect in the theft, officers from the Linear Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia at Koltsovo Airport began searching for him and detained him at 17:00 the same day in a residential area near the airport.

      The perpetrator turned out to be a 43-year-old resident of Orenburg, who had no previous legal issues. He confessed to the crime. In a conversation with the police, the man explained that he planned to fly to Moscow on an evening flight that day. At the airport's entrance, he noticed the wallet, which he took for himself. After that, the suspect left the airport and checked the contents of the bag in a deserted area.

      He claimed to have thrown the bag and passport into a forested area near the cargo terminal of the air hub.

      "Almost all the money, except for 1,000 rubles, had been spent by the time of his detention, but what exactly it was spent on is yet to be determined by the criminal investigation department, as the citizen himself is not in a hurry to share this information with the police," the press service of the department reported.

      The investigative unit of the Linear Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia at Koltsovo Airport has initiated a criminal case against the Orenburg resident under paragraph "b" of part 2 of article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (theft, causing significant damage to a citizen). The issue of choosing a preventive measure will be resolved in the near future. The investigation of the criminal case is ongoing.
