Potatoes did not become cheaper this summer despite the start of the new harvest.
Despite the new potato season having started, prices have hardly decreased this summer. This fact was noted by "Federal Press."
In a week, root vegetable No. 1 has decreased by less than one percent, reports "Federal Press," citing data from Sverdlovskstat.
For a kilogram of potatoes in Sverdlovsk stores, one will have to pay an average of 76 rubles. Last August, it could be purchased for 64 rubles, the publication notes.
"Despite the harvest season having started, the product has hardly decreased in price," conclude the journalists.
The reason for the persistently high prices has been the heavy rainfall in the region, which has destroyed part of the crops, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Sverdlovsk region previously reported, as conveyed by the EAN agency.
A municipal-level state of emergency due to soil over-saturation, which threatens crop failure, has been declared, particularly in the Beloyarsky district—the largest in the Sverdlovsk region for potato production, writes "Federal Press."
It is worth noting that potato prices caused public outcry last year. Potatoes became the most expensive product in the country as early as 2024. The issue of a shortage of domestic potatoes in Russia has personally interested President Vladimir Putin.
At the end of May 2025, the Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Sverdlovsk region, Anna Kuznetsova, confirmed on OTV that the situation with insufficient areas for planting root vegetables is observed throughout Russia.
According to an industry processing expert, a large portion of the potato harvest in Russia is lost due to storage conditions. Furthermore, retail chains are not ready to purchase small or damaged root vegetables, while they account for a quarter of the harvest.
