- A batch of fresh peaches weighing 9.7 tons arrived at the fruit and vegetable base in Yekaterinburg by road transport. The initial inspection raised suspicions, after which samples were sent for laboratory testing. A live quarantine object - the oriental fruit moth - was found in the peaches, the agency clarified.
The oriental fruit moth is a small but voracious butterfly that is considered one of the most dangerous pests for orchards. Its caterpillars damage fruits from the inside, posing a significant threat to agriculture. The detection of even one viable specimen is grounds for declaring the entire batch infected. Rosselkhoznadzor notified the cargo owner of the danger, and he decided to destroy the batch.
