September 3, 2026 - Transport police in Serov detained a resident of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, suspected of stealing money and jewelry from a fellow passenger on a train, the press service of the Transport Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Ural Federal District reported on Thursday.
Information about the crime was received by the transport police in Serov from the police department of the city of Novaya Lyalya. A 55-year-old pensioner, a resident of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, contacted the police for help. The woman arrived in Novaya Lyalya on the passenger train "Priobie - Yekaterinburg." She was carrying cash in the amount of 105,000 rubles, bank cards, as well as gold earrings, rings, and chains, which she valued at another 95,000 rubles, in her clutch.
"The citizen is afraid that her home may be robbed in her absence, and therefore prefers to take her jewelry and savings with her every time she leaves her hometown for more than one day," explained the Ural Federal District's Transport Ministry.
Upon arriving at her destination, the victim soon realized that she had left her handbag on the train. Transport police officers examined the list of train passengers and established that the alleged perpetrator was traveling with the victim in the same carriage, accompanied by her 66-year-old mother and 3-year-old daughter. The police found out that the suspect arrived in Yekaterinburg, where she transferred to a train to Tyumen.
She spent nearly 10 days in the regional center and then purchased tickets for herself, her mother, and her child for the return journey. During the train's stop at the Serov station, the woman was detained by criminal investigation officers.
As a result of a personal search of the 38-year-old resident of the Soviet district of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, stolen jewelry and cash amounting to 73,000 rubles were found in her luggage. The perpetrator, who turned out to be an unconvicted saleswoman, confessed to the crime.
The woman explained that she appropriated the forgotten handbag of her train companion when no one was around. In Yekaterinburg, she examined the contents of the clutch, threw away the bank cards, and spent part of the money in Tyumen for personal needs. She could not explain what prompted her to commit the theft.
An investigator from the Linear Police Department at the Serov station has initiated a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (theft causing significant damage to a citizen, either from clothing, a bag, or other hand luggage that was with the victim - note from Uralweb.ru). The seized money and jewelry will be returned to the rightful owner shortly. The suspect will remain under a travel ban until the court date.
