In Yekaterinburg on Thursday, September 4, a sentence was handed down to a former militiaman accused of murders committed in the late 1990s as part of a gang made up of similar "turncoats."

According to the investigation, in the period from October 1999 to November 2000 the head of the division for illegal drug trafficking at the Department of Internal Affairs (UVD) of the Kirov District of Yekaterinburg organized a stable armed group (gang) that involved two operative officers of the Kirov UVD, including the accused, born in 1969. The latter, in turn, involved two more accomplices, the press service of the Sverdlovsk Region prosecutor’s office reported.

In June 2000, having learned that a criminal case had been opened against the operatives for exceeding their official authority based on a complaint by a man, the gang members decided to try to persuade him to change his testimony. To that end they went to a heated shelter on Novgorodtseva Street, where, in addition to the victim—who led an antisocial lifestyle—three of his acquaintances were present.

The operative accomplices told everyone to lie on the ground. The man who had testified against them tried to flee, and the accused born in 1969 fired shots from a smoothbore weapon (a shotgun) in his direction, while his accomplices fired in the direction of the victim’s three acquaintances. As a result, three people were killed; one survived—he was spotted by passersby by chance and given assistance.

In October of the same year, the accused, as part of the gang, committed the murder of a Yekaterinburg resident for a monetary reward (not less than $1,000).

In November, having learned that an acquaintance was arriving in Yekaterinburg with a large sum of money to purchase goods, the gang members, including the accused, attacked the victim and his female acquaintance at a house on Pekhotintsev Street and, having killed them, stole a bag containing money (no more than 250,000 rubles).

The defendant, charged under subparagraphs “a,” “zh,” and “z” of part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder of two or more persons committed with particular cruelty; contract murder; accompanied by robbery and banditry by a group of persons, as well as by a group of persons by prior agreement), pleaded guilty in full.

The court sentenced the convicted man to nine years in a maximum-security penal colony.

It should be recalled that district courts in Yekaterinburg are currently holding hearings considering the criminal cases of members of the gang of militiamen organized by the head of the Organized Crime Unit (OBON) of the Kirov District Department of Internal Affairs, Vladislav Sobol.

In particular, the Kirov District Court received the criminal case of a former employee of the Kirov RUVD, 55-year-old Anton Borovik, who currently holds the post of head of the Real Estate Transactions Department of the Yekaterinburg Administration. His dismissal from the mayor’s office has not been officially announced.
