The cause of the smog that engulfed Sverdlovsk Oblast has been identified.
Due to the prolonged presence of an anticyclone over the Urals, producing dry, windless weather, a warning "On adverse meteorological conditions (AMC)" has been issued in Sverdlovsk Oblast for a week starting from the evening of Monday, September 15. This was reported by the Telegram channel of the Ural Hydrometeorological Center.
The settled weather in the region has weakened mixing of air in the near-surface layer. Because of this, until 20:00 on Monday, September 22, a level‑1 warning of adverse meteorological conditions for the dispersion of harmful pollutants in the atmospheric air has been issued for Sverdlovsk Oblast.
"In the next three to four days the anticyclone will maintain dry, warm weather with light winds, with isolated night frosts of -0 to -2°C and fogs," the Ural Hydrometeorological Center said.
"The front will make itself felt on the coming Sunday, September 21, with an increase in cloud cover and light rain; in the mountains of northern Sverdlovsk Oblast moderate rain (3–5 mm of precipitation) is likely, with temperatures falling by 2–4°C. The Indian summer will end."
Recall that two aircraft bound for Koltsovo diverted to alternate airports today due to thick fog in Yekaterinburg.
Earlier in September the chief forecaster of the Ural Hydrometeorological Center, Galina Sheporenko, said that this summer the region's norms for thunderstorms and fogs had been "exceeded."
