Art-industrial routes await tourists
The Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art invites guests and residents of Yekaterinburg on a two-day trip along the Yekaterinburg–Satka–Porogi–Zlatoust route. Photo: Dmitry Chasovitin.
On the route you will visit the Karagaysky quarry, learn about the history of the Satka Ironworks, take a walk around Satka with a researcher from the Satka Local History Museum, see street art created by internationally recognized artists, visit the best architectural structure of the Soviet Union of 1951 — the Magnesit Palace of Culture. You will find out where the “orange paradise” is in Satka and who lost four-meter sneakers there.
In the settlement of Mezhevoy you will be photographed against the backdrop of unusual brick towers — old mine furnaces — and visit one of the country’s oldest hydroelectric power plants — the Porozhskaya HPP.
In Zlatoust you will visit a modern forge and learn how Damascus steel is made.
The route is planned for two days. More details
Another one-day route from the biennial — Yekaterinburg — Asbest — Reftinsky.
In the town of Asbest and the urban-type settlement of Reftinsky you will find the largest quarry in Europe and Russia’s largest coal-fired power plant with a 330-meter chimney, one of the tallest in the world, early sculptures by E. Neizvestny, and a neighborhood in which the residential buildings are arranged to form the abbreviation USSR. More details
