In Yekaterinburg, an 86-year-old grandmother gave scammers 1.2 million rubles. They introduced themselves to her as employees of the military prosecutor’s office. The pensioner split the entire sum into two parts and handed it to couriers, one of whom was a 70-year-old woman.
A fake employee of the military prosecutor’s office contacted the victim and told her that a loan had been taken out in her name. He then said that all the banknotes she had at home needed to be checked for authenticity. The woman stated that the amount she had was 1.2 million.
— At the perpetrator’s instruction, the pensioner got into a taxi and went to a place where she was met by an elderly woman of about 70. The complainant handed the stranger packaged 506,000 rubles. The next day the woman handed the remaining 695,000 to another courier in the same way, the Yekaterinburg police department (UMVD) said.
Only after bank and police employees informed her did the grandmother learn she had been deceived. A criminal case has been opened on the charge of “fraud on a particularly large scale.”
