In Yekaterinburg, the mayor will now be elected differently.
In Sverdlovsk Oblast they plan to change the procedure for appointing mayors. The region’s governor has submitted to the Legislative Assembly a draft of amendments that provides a new scheme for nominating candidates for the positions of city heads, the portal E1.RU reports.
The main change is that now only the governor will be able to propose contenders, rather than the selection committees as before. At the same time he is required to present at least two candidates, from whom the deputies of the city Duma will choose one by vote.
The draft also abolishes the possibility of self-nomination — previously citizens could declare their desire to take part in the competition independently. Now this right is retained only by parliamentary parties, the regional Public Chamber, the Council of Municipal Formations of Sverdlovsk Oblast and the All‑Russian Association for the Development of Local Self‑Government.
