Because of the full moon, Sverdlovsk residents will not see the largest meteor shower of the year.
On the night of January 4 there will be the peak of one of the year's main meteor showers — the Quadrantids. This was reported to the EAN news outlet by Vladilen Sanakoev, an astronomer from Ural Federal University.
The peak will occur at 02:00 on January 4. The radiant of the meteor shower is in the constellation Boötes, which appears low above the horizon in the northern part of the sky. Unfortunately, observations will be hampered by the full Moon. This year the full moon falls on January 3, Sanakoev noted.
According to him, at the peak the zenithal hourly rate of meteors is 60 to 100 per hour. This year a lone observer will be able, under favorable conditions, to see up to 10 meteors per hour. Recall that in March a huge glowing orb flew over the Sverdlovsk region.
