Convicts in Sverdlovsk organized a cooking contest in a penal colony.
At the correctional center at IK-12 in Nizhny Tagil, inmates held a culinary contest dedicated to traditional New Year dishes. The event took place in the run-up to 2026, the Main Directorate of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Sverdlovsk Region reported.
Inmates serving sentences of forced labor presented their own versions of festive treats to a jury, demonstrating culinary skills and a creative approach. Each dish was accompanied by a short presentation in which participants spoke about the recipes and their significance for New Year traditions.
The entries were evaluated by UFIC staff, who paid attention not only to taste but also to originality of presentation and the effort to preserve the festive atmosphere. After the results were announced, the contest participants sampled the prepared dishes together.
As organizers noted, such events contribute to the social adaptation and rehabilitation of inmates, helping to maintain a positive outlook and foster a constructive attitude toward the future.
