A well-known athlete has died in Yekaterinburg.
In Yekaterinburg, 36-year-old athlete and kyokushin coach Lasha Gabaraev died after a serious illness, the press service of the RMK Martial Arts Academy reported.
"Lasha faced one of the most terrible illnesses and fought for his life for a long time. Many of you went through this difficult path with him — helped with treatment, supported him with words and deeds. Lasha became a coach at the RMK Martial Arts Academy on the day it opened and always devoted himself completely to his work with children and adults. It is as a man of action that we will forever remember our sensei," they said.
The two-time Russian and European karate champion was 36.
As Andrey Chirkov, president of kyokushin karate in the Sverdlovsk Region, told Komsomolskaya Pravda—Yekaterinburg, Lasha fought leukemia for two years.
"In Germany the athlete received a bone marrow transplant. He underwent a course of chemotherapy, but then a relapse occurred. Lasha Gabaraev is survived by a seven-year-old son."
