The "Gymnasium" square appeared in the very center of Yekaterinburg.
Two green zones in Yekaterinburg have received official names on the city map. The decision was made at a meeting of the toponymy commission held on Friday, March 27, under the leadership of Vice Mayor Rustam Galyamov.
Thus, the square near the building of Gymnasium No. 9, at the intersection of 8 Marta Street and Lenin Avenue, has been named "Gymnasium Square."
The Ural Society of Lovers of Natural Science and the first local history museum in the city were established at the gymnasium in 1870. During the Great Patriotic War, two hospitals were located here. Today, Gymnasium No. 9 is one of the best educational institutions in the city.
The pedestrian part of Mira Street (from Blukhera to Akademicheskaya) has been named "Volunteer Alley."
Earlier, in 2019, a proposal to name this section of Mira Street "Volunteer Alley" was considered by the toponymy commission, the press service of the mayor's office reports. The name was decided to be changed, as since then the semantics of the word has changed significantly: volunteers are more often referred to as people who enlist in military service of their own accord, while volunteers are those who provide voluntary assistance in civil life, including those who help organizers conduct large international events and collect votes for the improvement of parks under the FCGS program.
