Tons of contaminated tomatoes from Kazakhstan have made their way to Yekaterinburg.
In Yekaterinburg, specialists from the Ural Interregional Office of Rosselkhoznadzor conducted an inspection of a batch of tomatoes weighing 18 tons that arrived from Kazakhstan. According to the results of laboratory analysis, a pest was found in the vegetables.
As reported by the agency's press service, a quarantine object was identified in the product - the tomato brown rugose fruit virus, which was confirmed by the conclusion of the Yekaterinburg branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "VNIIZZh". This virus affects tomatoes and peppers, causing leaf mosaic, as well as deformation and wrinkling of the fruits.
It is noted that this virus does not pose a danger to humans; however, it can cause significant damage to agriculture, destroying 30% to 80% of the harvest. In this regard, the entire batch of tomatoes is subject to destruction, and the owner has been notified.
