The traffic police have asked residents of Sverdlovsk not to travel anywhere.
In the Sverdlovsk region, 197 road traffic accidents occurred in the past 24 hours, reported the regional State Traffic Safety Inspectorate. In six accidents, people were injured: one person died, and another eight were injured.
According to the agency, the deterioration of the road situation is linked to adverse weather conditions—negative temperatures, snowfall, and icy roads. A significant increase in the number of accidents is also explained by the fact that many drivers prematurely switched from winter tires to summer ones.
The State Traffic Safety Inspectorate emphasized that operating vehicles on summer tires in the presence of snow cover and ice is unacceptable and unsafe. Drivers are advised to refrain from traveling whenever possible until a stable average daily temperature above +5°C is established and the snow completely melts from the roads.
For those who still venture onto the roads, it is recommended to observe increased caution: choose a safe speed, increase the distance, and avoid sharp maneuvers. Traffic inspectors urge not to take risks and either wait out the bad weather or return to using winter tires until stable warm weather arrives.
