The Yekaterinburg Zoo told how the lion Ernie ended up there.
Today, May 15, the Yekaterinburg Zoo celebrates the birthday of the African lion Ernie, who has turned 19 years old.
Like a true king of beasts, the lion is characterized by eccentricity, activity, and impulsiveness. Staff members note his "piercing gaze," loud roar, audible from any point in the zoo, and his fatherly love for his offspring.
"Once, the family had 5 cubs at once, and the little lions, while playing, climbed onto Ernie: some crawled on his back, others played with his tail, but the wise father patiently and calmly endured all the children's antics, only occasionally glancing at the mother of his children," the press service describes Ernie's behavior.
Ernie loves to walk in the summer enclosure and has a good appetite. His diet includes beef, chicken, offal, eggs, and live feed. Ernie loves chicken the most.
As a cub, Ernie traveled across Russia with a traveling circus, and then he was sold to the zoo. "His condition was distressing, but thanks to careful care and proper nutrition, he grew into a magnificent lion with a luxurious mane," the zoo's press service reported.
