A Sverdlovsk scientist explained why meteorologists often make mistakes with long-term forecasts.
Leading researcher of the climate and environmental physics laboratory at UrFU, Konstantin Gribanov, stated that modern technologies indeed allow for accurate weather forecasts two weeks or more in advance. However, this requires significant financial investments.
— In theory, a forecast can be made accurate for more than two weeks, but it is expensive. The further you forecast, the worse the prediction. There are technologies that have managed to forecast for a month, but this is an extreme attempt to attract large resources, — the expert is quoted by TASS.
He added that high forecast accuracy is possible with constant assimilation of a large volume of data — vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, wind, and others. Accurate weather forecasts are possible for meteorological services that regularly assimilate data from a large number of probes — about 100 per day. And for this, significant financial and technical resources are needed. Earlier, meteorologists delivered sad news to the residents of Sverdlovsk.
