A teenager from Novaya Lyalya thwarted the plans of fraudsters by overhearing their conversation in a minibus.
On June 2, 2026, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Vladimir Kolokoltsev, awarded the young Ural resident who saved an elderly woman from fraudsters via video link. She was about to give them one million rubles, the media relations department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Yekaterinburg reported on Tuesday.
This story took place on March 18, 2025, in Novaya Lyalya. In a minibus, an elderly woman, who was being led by fraudsters over the phone, was talking to a criminal on speakerphone. She was heading to the bank to follow his instructions and was telling the scammer about her finances.
Their conversation was accidentally overheard by a teenager, Ivan Komogorov, who was also on the bus. Realizing that it was a fraudulent scheme, he informed the elderly woman, but she did not pay attention to the teenager's words.
Then Vanya called his mother, who works in the local police department. He described the woman's appearance and informed her that she was going to the bank. When the police arrived at the bank branch, the elderly woman was already there. She explained that unknown individuals had contacted her the night before and tricked her into giving them her access code to the State Services.
"The situation then developed according to the known scheme: a resident of Novaya Lyalya received calls from fake bank employees, state services, and security services, demanding that she transfer her savings to a 'safe account.' The police escorted the woman to the MFC, where her access code to the State Services was changed," the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.
The woman's money remained safe.
On the eve of Children's Day, Ivan Komogorov was invited with his parents to the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Sverdlovsk region. By order of the head of the department, Police Lieutenant General Alexander Meshkov, his deputy, Police Colonel Rashid Daulotov, presented Ivan with a certificate of honor from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia and a commemorative gift. The solemn event was held via video conference by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Russia, Police General Vladimir Kolokoltsev. A total of 17 teenagers from 13 regions of the country were awarded that day.
"Young citizens, the youngest of whom is only nine years old, showed courage and an active civic position in detaining criminals and preventing offenses," said the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Irina Volk.
