Yekaterinburg residents are invited today to a demonstration feeding of the crocodile Innokentiy.
The Yekaterinburg Zoo will celebrate World Crocodile Day and showcase the feeding of the legendary Kesha.
The Yekaterinburg Zoo has prepared a festive program for World Crocodile Day, which is celebrated annually on June 17. The main character of the event will be one of the most famous inhabitants of the zoo - the Cuban crocodile Innokentiy, better known to visitors as Kesha.
The story of the reptile, which has lived in Yekaterinburg for almost 30 years, is shrouded in legends. According to one version, the crocodile arrived in Russia from Cuba as a "live souvenir" brought by a sailor. In childhood, he lived in Kaliningrad, and when he grew up and could no longer fit in domestic conditions, a new home was sought for the two-meter pet. In 1995, Kesha moved to the Yekaterinburg Zoo, where he still lives today.
Visitors often mistake the motionless crocodile for a dummy, as he spends most of his time immobile. However, zoo staff note that Kesha recognizes his name, interacts calmly with the keepers, and carefully accepts food.
The Cuban crocodile is a rare species and is endangered. In the wild, it can only be found in the Zapata swamp and on the island of Juventud in Cuba.
As part of the celebration, zoo guests will be able to see a demonstration feeding of Kesha. It will take place at 14:00 in the "Southern" pavilion on the first floor. After that, at 14:30, a themed tour "Scaly and Cold-Blooded" will begin, during which visitors will learn about the peculiarities of reptile life.
