The mayor of Oryol explained why not all sidewalks will be fenced for pedestrian safety.
After the high-profile accident with fatalities in Yekaterinburg, there are no plans to install barriers along all sidewalks universally. As stated by the city's head, Alexey Orlov, at a meeting with deputies, modern safety requirements allow for the use of not only fences but also landscaping elements to separate pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
According to the mayor, the existing standards have been revised: whereas previously sidewalks had to be separated by solid barriers, now this function can be performed by lawns, shrubs, and trees. At the same time, in places where additional protective measures are truly necessary, barriers continue to be installed. In the near future, such work will be carried out on Mashinnaya Street, in particular.
Orlov noted that he is against the mass use of fences in urban environments. In his opinion, the main focus should be on improving driving culture and adhering to traffic rules.
— It is necessary to ensure that drivers do not exceed the speed limit and follow the rules.
Additionally, the city head reminded that a large number of barriers affects the external appearance of Yekaterinburg. According to him, such structures require constant maintenance, timely repairs, and painting.
