A resident of Udmurtia had money deducted from his card after he smiled in a store.
A resident of Udmurtia unknowingly had money deducted from his card by a terminal with smile payment capability yesterday. This is how the Russian man learned that he had been subscribed to biometric payment for six years.
As Oleg, a resident of the city of Sarapul, told the Uralweb.ru portal, he was buying ice cream at a dairy kiosk on Friday afternoon. He paid with a T-Bank card, but the push notification about the deduction of 69 rubles came from a Sberbank credit card for some reason. Clearly remembering that he had paid with "Tinkoff," Oleg called Sberbank's support service.
— You have biometric payment enabled, — the consultant explained. — Apparently, you accidentally smiled at the terminal.
Oleg recalled that during the ice cream purchase on his lunch break, he was with a colleague, and the men were talking, and he smiled. It turned out, at the acquiring device.
— You probably applied for something at the bank branch and they took your biometrics, — the Sberbank employee explained.
However, the man had not left any biometric data at the bank. They had, of course, asked him to "look at the camera," but that was all. But the employee named the exact date of biometric activation — July 15, 2020.
After the call to the bank, Oleg understood why about two weeks ago, money had not been deducted from his card for lunch at a cafe. It had been deducted, but also with a smile, from Sber's credit card.
— Just like that, you smile somewhere and accidentally pay for someone else's purchases, — Oleg realized.
However, the Sber consultant informed him how to remotely disable the biometric payment service. You need to go into the Sberbank Online app, type "smile payment" in the search bar, find the desired option, and click "disable."
