As a result of the explosion of a gas mixture, two fishermen from Tatarstan and two of their colleagues from Yekaterinburg, working in the same team on the facilities of the Gorky Railway, miraculously survived. This was reported on Thursday to the Uralweb.ru portal by the head of the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Sverdlovsk region, Colonel Valery Gorelykh.
A distressing message about the injured was received by the local police station from a nurse in the hospital's emergency room. The incident occurred in the evening on the shore of the Biserte Pond in the Nizhneserginsky district. To establish the exact and detailed circumstances of what happened, police officers were dispatched to the scene.
"The victims were residents of the Republic of Tatarstan, Akhmetzyanov and Zhuravlyov, born in 1976 and 1977, as well as their colleagues from Yekaterinburg, Yusupov and Kuryanov, born in 1973 and 1999. Each of them has burns covering about 15% of their bodies," Valery Gorelykh reported.
All four injured individuals with first and second-degree burns have been hospitalized in a Yekaterinburg hospital.
The day before, the railway workers, according to preliminary data, arrived at the water body to fish. To shelter from the rain, they set up a tent, and inside it, a device for cooking using a 250 ml tourist gas cylinder, Colonel Gorelykh said.
"After a short time, the nature lovers smelled gas. However, instead of urgently ventilating their 'home,' they thought to illuminate the area of a possible leak of the flammable substance with a lighter. As soon as the fire-starting device was activated, a powerful explosion occurred, followed by a fire. When the fishermen came to their senses, they saw that only the metal frame of their tent remained, and nearby lay a fishing rod case," he noted.
The regional police are conducting an investigation into this incident. Based on the results of the investigation into the causes of the emergency and a detailed examination of the victims' testimonies, representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will make a justified procedural decision.
"Criminal proceedings may be initiated under the article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation regarding causing harm to health through negligence," Colonel Gorelykh added.
Detectives have appointed an examination to determine the severity of the injuries sustained by the victims. The investigation is ongoing.
