Analysts have announced the imminent disappearance of the Sverdlovsk city
Today at 10:37 Sverdlovsk Verkhny Tagil has been listed among 129 settlements on the verge of disappearance, reports Izvestia citing a study by the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Service under the President of Russia.
According to the study, over the past 10 years, the population of small towns with up to 50,000 residents has decreased by a total of 314,500 people. Demographic decline is observed in single-industry towns in northern regions, where the population is engaged in coal mining, metallurgy, and the forest industry.
The most severe situation, aside from Verkhny Tagil, is observed in the following towns: Trubchevsk (Bryansk Region), Inta (Komi), Kem and Medvezhyegorsk (Karelia), Torzhok (Tver Region), and other peripheral towns of developed regions such as Roshal (Moscow Region) and Oha (Sakhalin Region). Additionally, Porhov (Pskov Region), Zavolzhye (Nizhny Novgorod Region), and Nolinck (Kirov Region) are considered problematic areas.
— The declining towns in agro-industrial regions are in somewhat better condition due to food security and more favorable living conditions. However, the crisis in industrial production and the continued migration of the population to larger centers increase the risk of losing settlements, — the publication EAN quotes from the study.
According to experts’ estimates, these settlements lack resources. Nevertheless, 4 billion rubles were allocated in the 2025 budget for the development of small towns.
