Sverdlovsk authorities want to take Kharitonovsky Park away from Muscovites.
Sverdlovsk Region authorities intend to take Kharitonovsky Garden in Yekaterinburg back from the management of a Moscow agency that for decades has not been carrying out its improvement. The issue was discussed on September 4 at a meeting of the "Council of the Concerned" by acting governor Denis Pasler and the city's mayor Alexey Orlov.
"We will no longer pay for the upkeep of an asset that is not being put in order, even though the municipality allocates significant funds for it. I sent the agency responsible for monuments there. We will create the conditions for negotiations, and when we obtain a court ruling on the need to invest hundreds of millions, they will talk to us differently. And for now there is no point for them to hand anything over," Pasler said.
The mayor of Yekaterinburg noted that work on Kharitonovsky Garden has, in fact, already begun:
"You are absolutely right, we need to create an atmosphere for negotiations. Right now the federal side is satisfied with everything: they receive the money and only partially fulfill their obligations. That, of course, does not suit us."
At the meeting they also presented the project for Yekaterinburg's Main Park, which will include the territory of Kharitonovsky Garden. Design will start in 2026, construction in 2027 and will take two years.
According to the plans, the garden will retain the status of a classic landscaped park with picnic areas. The pond's shore will be improved and landscaped, and the water body itself will be cleaned. The central fountain, the rotunda with a summer stage and the staircases leading to it will also be restored.
A Main Park could appear in Yekaterinburg by 2029. According to the designers, the space is intended to become a second New York–style Central Park or Moscow's Zaryadye.
